A Brooklyn native, Erik Siuda has always been interested in art. He attended the School of Visual Arts and became an apprentice in a tattoo shop in New York in the 1990’s. In 2013, he began designing a line of tattoo coloring books for Dover’s Creative Haven line.
In 2015, Erik was invited to compete in the reality show Ink Master with over 80,000 other tattoo artists, finishing in the top three, which has led to even more interest in his art. Erik was kind enough to answer some questions for us.
Q: What inspired you to start creating art for coloring books?
Erik: I thought it would be an easier way to be able to share my artwork on a larger scale.
Q: How long have you been drawing?
Erik: I’ve always been fascinated by art since I was a child.
Q: Do you work entirely digitally, or do you prefer pen and paper when creating?
Erik: I prefer a pen and paper. I find that it is more personal and from the soul. The entire act of drawing itself makes it more intense and real.
Q: Do you make/sell other kinds of art? (Aside from tattoos, of course!)
Erik: Yes, everything from paintings, to skateboards to custom designed clothing. I am available for commissioned artwork.
Q: When coloring your own art, what is your favorite medium?
Erik: I don’t have a favorite, I use mixed media. Paint, (oils & acrylics), markers, colored pencil, etc. etc. etc.
Q: What color or colors do you most love to work with?
Erik: I use the FULL spectrum.
Q: Tell us a little bit about your art. Do you have a favorite piece that you created?
Erik: My style has come from all things I love. I’ve been lucky to be able to execute my imagination through my artwork
Q: Other than creating coloring book art, what interesting hobbies or activities do you enjoy?
Erik: I enjoy motorcycles, hot rods, fishing and being a good father and a good husband. [I try to spend] time with my family as much as possible.
Q: Have you had any memorable responses to your art work from collectors?
Erik: By collectors I refer to my [tattoo] clients and they have something that they can cherish forever in the form of permanent artwork.
Q: If you had to choose one superpower, what would it be?
Erik: Time travel.
Q: Who is your favorite artist?
Erik: There are so many I’ve looked up to and been inspired by. Drew Struzan, Michelangelo, DaVinci, all the great legends.
Q: Is there some person, place or thing that inspires you when you are creating your art?
Erik: An emotion, or my family. My wife and kids are a driving force in my art.
