Dover normally releases coloring books with about 30 designs each. They have enough books now that they’ve begun creating omnibus editions, publishing four books with the same theme as a single book. In the Big Book of Geometric Designs and Illustrations to Color, Dover has combined two books (Geometrical Design Coloring Book and Visual Illusions Coloring Book) by Spyros Horemis and two books (Dazzling Designs Coloring Book and Optical Illusions Coloring Book) by Koichi Sato.

There is a large range in the designs, from very simple to extremely complex, so both beginners and advanced colorists will be able to find something to color. Many of the designs are also 3D optical illusions. Be aware that to fit this many designs into the book, the designs are printed on both sides of the pages. The pages are also not perforated, so if you want to remove them from the book, you’ll have to use an exacto knife or have the binding removed.

Review Breakdown

  • Complexity: Beginner to Advanced
  • Book Size: 8.25 x 11 inches
  • Design Borders: varies, some with none, others with a rectangular border
  • Design Lines: digital designs, line thickness varies from thin to very heavy, with most lines in the medium range
  • Paper: smooth, average thickness
  • Printing: double-sided
  • Binding: glue-bound

In general, I find the designs by Spyros Horemis to be more suitable for beginners than the designs by Koichi Sato, but I also think Spyros’s designs have more variety in shapes and patterns.

Because of the large variety in both complexity and style, I think most people will be able to find something in the book they would enjoy coloring. If you like abstract, geometric designs, you’ll find over 130 of them in this omnibus edition.
