The year is 1880, the location Paris, France. A thriving artist district is filled with painters, sculptors, glassmakers, and other craftsmen. In the evenings, just down the street, cabarets filled with vibrant colors, lively music, and brightly-dressed dancers entertain and inspire. Early versions of the famous French cancan moves are finding their way into the cabarets and dance halls, despite the “scandalous” reputation. Can you hear it? The Infernal Galop from Jacques Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld is playing. The ladies in their bright skirts and petticoats line up on the stage, and the audience cheers as the cancan begins…

Artists such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Louis Comfort Tiffany (yes, that Tiffany!) immersed themselves in this colorful atmosphere, and were inspired by it. The “New Art” style (which we amusingly now consider to be rather “retro”) began showing up in art and architecture all over Europe. I really like the description I found on the History page of the Art Nouveau Museum “The 1900 Collection” website.

Art Nouveau found its inspiration in the world of the vegetal, the floral, and the imaginary woman. This dream world invaded with an obsessive fashion the glazed finish of the porcelain, the china, glassware and furniture with their fabulous entangled curves and counter curves combined with fireworks of color.

Marty Noble celebrates this vibrant art form in her coloring book with 30 full-page designs. As with the original Art Nouveau style, the designs in her book are inspired by the natural world, including leaves, vines, flowers, birds, and animals, as well as flowing and curved abstract elements.
